One of the things I like about RSS feeds is that it enables me to keep my eye on a lot of web sites and blogs without having to visit them. Most of the time a simple glance at the titles is enough for me to know I'm not interested in any more detail. But if something does catch my eye, I can just click on it to read it. It seems overwhelming at first but only if you try to take it all in. You get used to just scanning.

And as you mentioned before---the time it takes to learn it well. And then technology changes and moves on to bigger and better things.
